But what exactly is situational awareness? And why does it matter now more than ever?
🧩 Breaking Down Situational Awareness
Situational Awareness is more than just being alert. It’s a layered cognitive framework for understanding what’s happening, why it matters, and what will happen next.
Mica Endsley’s influential model outlines three key stages:
1️⃣ Perception
This is the foundation. It’s about gathering data from your environment. In cybersecurity, that means logs, telemetry, network flow data, and anomaly alerts. In healthcare, it could be vital signs and lab results. If perception fails, everything else collapses.
Example: You spot a failed login attempt from an unexpected location. That’s perception in action.
2️⃣ Comprehension
Now you ask, “So what?” You begin interpreting what the data means. Is this login an error, or a credential stuffing attempt? Are multiple systems showing similar anomalies?
This is where training, experience, and mental models help correlate inputs and form a situational narrative.
Example: You realize the login failure is part of a coordinated attack across multiple cloud accounts.
3️⃣ Projection
Finally, you anticipate what’s coming. What will happen if you don’t act now? What secondary systems might be compromised next?
Projection helps you proactively prevent escalation or disruption.
Example: Based on the pattern, you anticipate lateral movement and isolate the asset before attackers pivot deeper into the network.
